Luke’s $10k A Week Blog

I have finally landed a new job: I will be breaking down boxes at IdaCold, here in Nampa, ID. It is a place that does froxen hash browns. Apparently staffing agencies are much more likely to find something for you if you call in multiple times per week… Which I have been doing ever since I got married.

It’s not great, but it’s not terrible. I’ll make $7/hr. It starts tomorrow at 6am. At 8 hours, that’s $54, approximately 1/200th of my $10k goal for this week.

Designing graphical applications can be tricky. When a program uses more than text — has images, windows, buttons, etc. — it has a Graphical User Interface. The Message Flasher I wrote recently is an example, yet it has the advantage of being written in TCL/TK. This makes it a breeze to write and understand, relatively speaking.

TCL/TK is a combination of TCL (a simple-to-learn scripting language) and TK (an extension that lets you access the windowing system and do graphical stuff). TK can be used in other languages too. Python, Perl, Lua, and C++ all have versions of TK available for them. To edit text documents, I like to use an editor named vroom that is written in Python’s version of TK, known as Tkinter.

The most reliable and effective way to make money is to build a list. It can be email addresses, phone numbers, or mailing addresses — but the key with all of these is to not only collect the information, but also have a valid business relationship with people you have this information about.

Lacking a valid business relationship, you will find yourself guilty of spam. Email spam, telephone spam, direct-mail spam, it’s all spam if you don’t have their permission (however implicit that may be) to contact them.

Don’t you love blogging? I sure do. It’s not all about the money, you know. It’s about the fun. Here are seven simple ways to keep it fun.

1. Challenge yourself. Give yourself a specific challenge. For example, to write a new post every day. Or learn and write about everything you can on a specific subject for a week.

2. Make friends. There are all kinds of people out there. Some of them are bound to share many of your interests. Interact with them, not only on your own blog but theirs as well — or wherever you can get ahold of them.

There’s a new Social Networking site where you have to pay to get in. It’s called Wowzza! It is for serious marketers only, so if you have marketing products and business opportunities to sell, it’s a great place to sell them. Great place to find people to JV with. I’ve already got 20+ friends there… Very active community.

I started this 10k Luke site shortly after watching T. Harv Eker, the “Millionaire Mind” guy. It really inspired me.

Before that, I read a little book (yay, public domain!) called The Science Of Getting Rich. It was very interesting… but at the same time, somewhat esoteric and mysterious. The Harv Eker video really drove it home for me though, and I highly recommend watching it.

Basically, the idea is that you have an inner “wealth thermometer”. You envision yourself at a particular level of wealth, and strongly resist anything that brings you either below or above this. It’s kind of like a subconscious thermostat.

In Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series, characters have various powers, fueled by metal. Those who use the power of brass are called Rioters, because they can increase the intensity of others’ emotions, whereas those who use zinc are called Soothers, and can reduce the intensity of specific emotions.

While we can’t influence the emotions of others, we can influence our own emotions. In a sense, we are able to both soothe and riot specific emotions in ourselves to a limited degree.

Blogging about yourself is easy. It encourages you to give personal opinions and open up about your feelings. Unfortunately, this means less time spent talking about facts that you know for certain, or that are useful for the readers. Furthermore, it can easily detract from your sense of authority. There’s a reason scientific papers don’t start out with “In my opinion…”
