5 Types of Blog
Posted by: Luke in blogging, tags: blogs, creativity, leader, marketing, personality, resources, styleThere’s a lot of different styles that are employed in blogging. Here are five that I have found to be pretty common. They are not mutually exclusive of course, so you’ll find that the themes run together in many highly successful blogs. If you want a highly successful blog, it can’t hurt to imitate them!
Niche marketing. These are sites deliberately constructed to target a niche and sell to it. It can be gardening, weight loss, whatever. Raising red worms is an example of a niche that I am interested in.
Personal popularity. An example of this is Jason Boom or Steve Pavlina. It’s kind of like a benign cult, with a leader at the center.
Resources. This kind of site is attempting to provide you with as many resources as possible, generally in a particular area. Court’s Internet Marketing School The Ratings Blog fit this category.
Just for fun. Rarely do these take off, but they can morph into a profitable business if they happen to get popular. John Cow is a funny site that emphasizes the “fun” aspect.
Rants. Some blogs have a distinctly negative air to them. Often political sites are this way. Controversy attracts attention, so this can lead to a lot of traffic.
There are more kinds of blogs that could be mentioned, but these are the top 5 in my opinion. Disagree? Leave a comment, please!

Where would you say I fit in?

I’m just thankful you put “benign” in front of cult. I was just writing a post on Kool-Aid.
Thanks for the mention.

@ Rose: I’d say somewhere between #2 and #4… I see some controversy posts there too. Most blogs will fit all five to some degree, it seems. What do you think, did I cover all the bases or is there a different category that suits your blog better?
@Jason: Of course benign
Seriously you’ve got a lot of #3 in your blog, and maybe that’s its true category. But the personal aspect is a real selling point. Thanks for the comment!

I’ll be happy with between 2 and 4.

You know what’s funny?
I bet that worm blog that you linked to brings in more cash than about 98% of the “make money online” blogs out there.

Probably so! That’s the funny thing, you focus on making money online and there’s a huge temptation to use that as a topic to blog about (speaking from experience here) which in turn crowds the niche. I sort of think an MMO blog has the ideal place as an incubator for ideas, but the revenue stream itself should be something else.
I notice my red worms post was one of the most commented on. I really should write some more articles on that subject.

Hey, that’s an interesting idea. I’m trying to figure out where I fit in. Obviously I start at resource, but I’m quickly becoming a megalomaniac with the “landslide of visitors” hitting my blog. (Not really that many, but I like to live in my own little world.) I’m definitely gonna’ start heading in the direction Jason’s occupying if I’m not careful
muah ah ah ah . . . o yeah, benign, I almost fergot, heh, o did I type that out loud? dangit, not again . . .
BTW, thanks for commenting on my blog today. I gotta’ go respond now, so here i go!
PS - definitely, more worms!
PPS - how about corporate & celebrity? maybe they fall under niche and fun, but you know, i gotta try to add something . . .

Hmm, corporate might be between nich marketing and resources. Celebrities would probably be under fun, but where negative gossip is concerned I’d call them more like rants. And I’d tune them out, but that’s just me
Kind of cool how if you generalize enough you can get anywhere from anywhere
Of course, mine is the cult-like one. I just want you to think it’s benign.
Aaaand more worms coming up. I’ll start something into my buffer. Thanks for the great feedback, Zack!

How would you call my blog? I guess it’s more of marketing, SEO, web experiments rants. It’s kind of niche but it has a wider, broader subjects range.

I’d place yours mainly under resources, Chip. That seems to be most of what it’s about, resources for bloggers. Any of these attributes can be mixed together to make a more powerful statement, though… You can have personality + rants + resources, for example. The more the merrier, I figure!
